William Blake's Jerusalem Explained.

Chapter 4: Plate 86

I see thy Form O lovely mild Jerusalem, Wingd with Six Wings
In the opacous Bosom of the Sleeper. lovely Three-fold
In Head & Heart & Reins three Universes of love & beauty
Thy forehead bright: Holiness to the Lord, with Gates of pearl
Reflects Eternity beneath thy azure wings of feathery down.
Ribbd delicate & clothd with featherd gold & azure & purple
From thy white shoulders shadowing. purity in holiness!
Thence featherd with soft crimson of the ruby bright as fire
Spreading into the azure Wings which like a canopy
Bends over thy immortal Head in which Eternity dwells
Albion beloved Land; I see thy mountains & thy hills
And valleys & thy pleasant Cities Holiness to the Lord
I see the Spectres of thy Dead O Emanation of Albion.

Thy Bosom white, translucent coverd with immortal gems
A sublime ornament not obscuring the outlines of beauty
Terrible to behold for thy extreme beauty & perfection
Twelve-fold, here all the Tribes of Israel I behold
Upon the Holy Land: I see the River of Life & Tree of Life
I see the New Jerusalem descending out of Heaven
Between thy Wings of gold & silver featherd immortal
Clear as the rainbow, as the cloud of the Suns tabernacle

Thy Reins coverd with Wings translucent sometimes covering
And sometimes spread abroad reveal the flames of holiness
Which like a robe covers: & like a Veil of Seraphim
In flaming fire unceasing burns from Eternity to Eternity
Twelvefold I there behold Israel in her Tents,
A Pillar of a Cloud by day: a Pillar of fire by night
Guides them: there I behold Moab & Ammon & Amalek
There Bells of silver round thy knees living articulate
Comforting sounds of love & harmony & on thy feet
Sandals of gold & pearl, & Egypt & Assyria before me
The Isles of Javan, Philistea. Tyre and Lebanon

Thus Los sings upon his Watch walking from Furnace to Furnace
He siezes his Hammer every hour, flames surround him as
He beats: seas roll beneath his feet, tempests muster
Aroud his head. the thick hail stones stand ready to obey
His voice in the black cloud, his Sons labour in thunders
At his Furnaces; his Daughters at their Looms sing woes
His Emanation separates in milky fibres agonizing
Among the golden Looms of Cathedron sending fibres of love
From Golgonooza with sweet visions for Jerusalem, wanderer.

Nor can any consummate bliss without being Generated
On Earth; of those whose Emanations weave the loves
Of Beulah for Jerusalem & Shiloh, in immortal Golgonooza
Concentering in the majestic form of Erin in eternal tears
Viewing the Winding Worm on the Desarts of Great Tartary
Viewing Los in his shudderings, pouring balm on his sorrows
So dread is Los's fury, that none dare him to approach
Without becoming his Children in the Furnaces of affliction

And Enitharmon like a faint rainbow waved before him
Filling with Fibres from his loins which reddend with desire
Into a Globe of blood beneath his bosom trembling in darkness
Of Albions clouds, he fed it, with his tears & bitter groans
Hiding his Spectre in invisibility from the timorous Shade
Till it became a separated cloud of beauty grace & love
Among the darkness of his Furnaces dividing asunder till
She separated stood before him a lovely Female weeping
Even Enitharmon separated outside, & his Loins closed
And heal'd after the separation: his pains he soon forgot:
Lured by her beauty outside of himself in shadowy grief.
Two Wills they had; Two Intellects; & not as in times of old.

Silent they wanderd hand in hand like two Infants wandring
From Enion in the desarts, terrified at each others beauty
Envying each other yet desiring, in all devouring Love

1-10

Los sees Jerusalem deep within the sleeping Albion on the rock, her finite form restored: "I see thy Form O lovely mild Jerusalem, Wingd with six Wings/In the opacous Bosom of the Sleeper". Her form, its archetype in Revelation, is the visionary focus for the emanative potencies in the finite. Jerusalem is the sublime form of beauty in of the "Three-fold" vegetable universe: "In Head & Heart & Reins" she is envisioned in "three Universes of love & beauty". Finitude is regenerate in her love and beauty.

Blake is consistent in his mythology of the three-fold vegetable universe. For example, the three gates of "loins", "hearts", and "heads" are the gates of the sons and daughters of Los in Chapter 1, in the building of Golgonooza (1: 14; 16-30). Further, the "Vegetative Universe" of Chapter 1 "opens like a flower from the Earths Center" and "expands in Stars to the Mundane Shell/And there it meets Eternity again, both within and without" (1: 13; 34-36). Los vision of Jerusalem in Chapter 4 is of the eternity within and without her emanative form: her "forehead bright; Holiness to the Lord with Gates of pearl/Reflects Eternity; "from" her "white shoulders shadowing, purity in holiness"; her "azure wings" like a "canopy/Bends over" her "immortal Head in which Eternity dwells".

Albion beloved Land; I see thy mountains & thy hills
And valleys & thy pleasant Cities Holiness to the Lord
I see the Spectres of thy Dead O Emanation of Albion.

11-13

As the emanative giver of natural forms she is Albion's "beloved Land" and Los can "see" her "mountains &" her "hills/And valleys &" her "pleasant Cities, Holiness to the Lord". In the forms of her landscape Los sees the "Spectres of" her "dead" given forms of connective unity. He foreshadows the eternal life of regeneration. No longer do the "Spectres of the Dead follow" Gwendolen's "weaving threads", into the negation of the human form Divine, the worm (4: 82; 9).

14-21

As discussed, in finitude Vala seeks to usurp Jerusalem's energies, even though Vala is the shadow to Jerusalem's substance (2: 44; 39-40). On Albion's collapse and internal division, the daughters of Albion, controlled by Vala's influence, attempt to "weave Jerusalem a Body repugnant to the Lamb", and, reciprocally, a body for Hyle's masculine energies, also "a form against the Lamb of God" (4: 80; 65-79). Thereby shaping both the masculine and feminine energies in negation.

The visionary focus of the daughters is transformed as the sisters saw "the Furnaces opend & in tears/Began to give their souls away in the Furnaces of Affliction" (4: 82; 79-80). The vortex thus reversed, Los created a prophetic vision of the cleansed generation in his vision of emanative unity. His prophetic intentionality reorients the perceptions of the emanative energies from perversion, weaving forms for male and female "repugnant" and "against the Lamb of God", toward the vision of unity in Jerusalem.

Los sees purity of form: Jerusalem's "Bosom white, translucent coverd with immortal gems/A sublime ornament" not "obscuring the outlines of beauty". She is not the creator /destroyer goddess of fertility: her beauty is sublime transcending the power of fear of the limits of fertility for Jerusalem is "Terrible to behold" for her "extreme beauty & perfection". Thus she embodies in awe-inspiring three-fold sublimity the infinite beauty of the four-fold resurrected life.

Los sees prophetic history created in "the Holy Land" and in the regenerate world of Beulah. He sees "the River of Life & Tree of Life", the water and the cleansed vegetative life, nurturing and sustaining infinite being. Then he sees the prefiguration of regenerate finitude: "the New Jerusalem descending out of Heaven/Between" her "wings of gold & silver featherd immortal/Clear as the rainbow". Her light emanates in the materialisations of finitude "as the cloud of the Suns tabernacle" emanates in radiance and rainbow beauty.

Thy Reins coverd with Wings translucent sometimes covering
And sometimes spread abroad reveal the flames of holiness
Which like a robe covers: & like a Veil of Seraphim
In flaming fire unceasing burns from Eternity to Eternity

22-25

By contrast, Vala's finite power was concentrated in her "secret Cave" and the "red fires" of her womb (2:35; 50. 2:36; 1). Her fires were a parody of Divine energy. Los now prophetically envisions "the flames of holiness" of Divine love, that, inspiring the form of Jerusalem, "Like a robe covers: and like a Veil of Seraphim/In flaming fire unceasing burns from Eternity to Eternity". For Blake, God is always without and within for the duration of the finite cycle of Albion from self-exile into eternal death, and to being re-awakened by Christ.

26-32

Los envisions "Israel in her Tents" as prophetic history moves towards the incarnation: "A Pillar of a Cloud by day: a Pillar of fire by night/Guides them". He sees the three orders of the daughters "Moab & Ammon & Amalek" there with Israel: "There Bells of silver round" Jerusalem's knees "living" and "articulate" ring "Comforting sounds of love & harmony". On her are "feet/Sandals of gold & pearl and the nations of finitude, "Egypt & Assyria", and "The Isles of Javan, Philistea, Tyre and Lebanon".

33-41

Surrounded by his creative fires, Los "sings upon his Watch walking from Furnace to Furnace": and "flames surround him as/He beats: seas roll beneath his feet, tempests muster/Around his head". The elements are controlled by his ignited energies, even the "thick hail stones stand ready to obey/His voice in the black cloud" of Albion's inner darkness.

The daughters of Los "at their Looms sing woes/His Emanation", Enitharmon, "separates in milky fibres agonizing/Among the golden Looms of Cathedron sending fibres of love" throughout finitude. Cathedron and the labour of Los' daughters are described, in context in Chapter 2 (2: 59; 1-55). Now the spider web of envy is rewoven "in milky fibres agonizing" into "fibres of love". Christ speaks of such fibres, as noted, in the opening of Chapter 1 (1: 4; 6-10).

The emanative energies in the world of Beulah now weave life and materiality into connective unity inspired "From Golgonooza with sweet visions for Jerusalem, wanderer".

42-50

Generative fulfilment requires generation: "Nor can any consummate bliss without being Generated/On Earth" by the "Emanations". Renewed by Los' prophetic vision, they "weave the loves of Beulah & Shiloh" in the sublime recreation of the human form Divine "in immortal Golgonooza". The visionary focus for the patterns and forms of emanative weaving is no longer Vala. Now, "Concentering in the majestic form of Erin", emanative energy seeks sublimity: "Viewing the Winding Worm" and "Los in his shudderings" they are moved to compassion and pour "balm on his sorrows", for "So dread is Los' fury that none dare him to approach/Without becoming his Children in the Furnaces of affliction".

For Blake, the separation into masculine and feminine forms in finite generation is concomitant with Albion's collapse within. Accordingly, now Enitharmon divides from Los to become an independent life form. Los' emanation Enitharmon is divided from Los in finitude: "like a faint rainbow" of finite emanative light she "wavd before him/Filling with Fibres from his loins which redden with desire" into a "globe of blood". This event complex is described in the finite world of Ulro (1: 17; 50-55) where, as here in Beulah, Los hides "his Spectre in invisibility from the timorous shade" (1: 10; 29-36).

51-60

As is consistent throughout, Los exudes his emanation as a globe of blood, at the same time his spectre separates from his back. Her light and generative potencies "became a separated cloud of beauty grace & love/Among the Furnaces dividing asunder" from Los "till/She separated stood before him a lovely female weeping". For Blake, the descent of Jerusalem has inspired the emanative potencies of Enitharmon, who, in turn, will inspire all finite forms to sublime regeneration, however now, "Enitharmon separated outside, & his loins closed/And heal'd after the separation".

Two Wills they had; Two Intellects; & not as in times of old.

Silent they wanderd hand in hand like two Infants wandring
From Enion in the desarts, terrified at each others beauty
Envying each other yet desiring, in all devouring Love

61-64

The mutual predation of Albion's inner universe is transformed. In their innocence, Los and Enitharmon discover connectivity, but at first their connectivity is limited, deficient and finite: Los is "Lured by her beauty" that, renewed in Jerusalem's image, is an identity "outside of himself". Now, "Two Wills they had: Two Intellects: & not as in times of old".

The story of the two infants and Enion is described in The Four Zoas. Blake has the two as time and space. Here, "Silent they wanderd hand in hand" in innocence "like two Infants wandring/From Enion in the desarts" of Albion's ruin. Though "silent", they are not subject to the sacrifices of fertility worship. As I will show, the world of Beulah is cleansed of mutual predation, and the human form Divine renewed in Los and Enitharmon until, finally, Albion reawakens.

In this phase in the reversal of Beulah's vortex, Los and Enitharmon mature in innocence sexuality: "terrified at each others beauty/Envying each other yet desiring, in all devouring Love".
